About the add line numbers

The WordBench line numbering tool prefixes every line of your text with a sequential number, so a plain list or block becomes an ordered, referenceable one. Paste your text, choose where the numbering starts, and copy the numbered result.

Numbered lines make text easier to talk about. When you can say line 12 rather than the one near the middle, reviews, instructions, and support conversations get faster and clearer. Numbering also turns a bare list into a ranked or step-by-step one without retyping anything.

The numbers are right-aligned to a consistent width, so a list that runs past nine or ninety-nine stays neatly aligned rather than jagged. You can start the count at any number, which is handy when you are numbering a section that continues from an earlier block. Everything runs in your browser.

Who uses it

DevelopersNumber the lines of a snippet or log so you can point a teammate to an exact line.
Writers and editorsTurn a list of points into a numbered one, or add references for a line-by-line review.
Teachers and trainersNumber steps or examples in a handout so a class can follow along by number.
Support and opsAdd line references to instructions so users can report exactly where they are stuck.

Worked example

Try it with fictional text

Paste the four names acme, globex, initech, and umbrella on separate lines.

Starting at 1, the tool returns 1. acme, 2. globex, 3. initech, and 4. umbrella, each on its own line. Change the start value to 10 and the same list is numbered 10 through 13, with the numbers aligned to the same width.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose which number to start from?

Yes. Set any starting value and the count begins there, which is useful when a section continues the numbering from an earlier block of text.

How are the numbers aligned?

Numbers are right-aligned and padded to the width of the largest number in the list, so a list that reaches double or triple digits stays neatly lined up rather than ragged.

Does it number blank lines too?

Yes. Every line gets a number, including empty ones, so the count matches the actual line positions. Remove blank lines first with the empty line remover if you only want content lines numbered.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. The numbering runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or saved, and refreshing the page clears the text.
