Your text stays with you

WordBench is built so that the words you type never leave your browser. This page spells out exactly what that means, and how cookies, analytics, and ads work on the site.

What happens to your text

Every tool on WordBench runs as JavaScript inside your browser tab. When you type into the word counter, paste a list into the duplicate remover, or run any other tool, the text is processed on your own device. It is never uploaded to a server and never logged. That holds true regardless of anything else on this page, since no tool ever sends the content of the editor anywhere.

What stays in your browser

So that a refresh or a closed tab does not cost you your work, each tool keeps the text you typed into it in your browser's local storage, under keys that start with wordbench: (for example wordbench:reverse-text). The home page also remembers which tools you opened recently and which ones you starred, in the same way. This copy lives only on your own device, in this one browser, and only this site can read it. It is never sent to us or to anyone else, and it is not a cookie, so it does not travel with any request.

To remove it, press Clear in the tool, which deletes the saved text for that tool at once. Clearing your browser's site data for WordBench removes everything stored under those keys. In a private window, or with site data blocked, nothing is kept and the tools still work normally.

Named drafts on the word counter are kept separately, in this browser's IndexedDB (a database called wordbench). Each saved draft holds its full text, its name, the goal you set for it, and the word count it had at the start of the day, which is what the words-today figure counts from. Drafts stay until you delete them: use Delete on a draft or Delete all drafts in the Drafts panel, or clear this browser's site data for WordBench. Clear in the editor empties the editor only and does not delete a saved draft.

Two small settings are stored in local storage as well. Your light or dark choice is kept under wordbench:theme, and the word counter's saved text (wordbench:word-counter:draft) also notes which draft is open, by its id and name, so the editor reopens it after a refresh. Like the text, they never leave this browser.

Accounts and forms

WordBench has no accounts, no sign up, and no newsletter. The only form on the site is the contact page, which you use if you choose to send us a message; nothing else on the site asks you for information.

Cookies, analytics, and ads

WordBench runs no advertising and no analytics scripts, and sets no cookies at all. Not first party, not third party, not for preferences. There is no consent banner on this site because there is nothing to consent to.

That is a deliberate position rather than a temporary state. The one thing this site has that the ad-heavy alternatives do not is that it is quiet and it does not watch you, and putting an ad network on it would trade that away for a few cents a month. If it ever changes, this page will name the party involved before it goes live, and the change will appear on the changelog with a date.

The only numbers anyone here sees are the aggregate page and query figures Google Search Console reports for any indexed site: how many times a page appeared in results and how many people clicked. That data comes from Google, not from a script on this page, it is counted at the level of a page rather than a person, and it exists whether or not a site owner looks at it.

The embeddable widget

The counter can be embedded on other sites as an iframe. It behaves exactly like the rest of WordBench: the text a visitor types into it is processed in their own browser, is never uploaded, and is never logged. The widget sets no cookies and loads no analytics, which means a site embedding it does not have to mention it in a cookie banner. Details on the embed page.

Hosting

The site is hosted on Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel may keep short-lived technical logs of requests (such as IP address and the page requested) to serve the site and protect it from abuse. Those logs concern page requests only; the text you work on inside a tool is never part of any request. You can read more in Vercel's privacy policy.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes, for example if an analytics provider were ever switched on, this page will be updated to say so plainly and name the party involved, before it goes live rather than after.
